1. A city break in the heart of nature
The unspoilt nature around Kranj offers a playground for hiking and cycling all year round and for skiing in winter. The views of the mouintain peaks give Kranj its alpine character. The hills of Šmarjetna and Jošt are both reachable on foot or by mountain bike from the city centre.
2. The charming town and its residents
Kranj has one of the most charming old town centres in Slovenia. The easiest way to feel the local vibe is by visiting different cafes and events. The hospitality in the countryside will always inspire you by its warmth and cosiness. People from Kranj are famous for being friendly and talkative – the younger generations like to chat in English, while older people are more accustomed to German.
3. A leisurely stroll around the shops
The boutique shops are filled with local products and a friendly atmosphere, and the vendors will quickly spice up your visit with an anecdote or some interesting advice. The ground floors of Kranj's old houses maintain artisan activities, offering hand-made jewellery and unique clothing.
4. A canyon in the heart of the town
The people of Kranj live in harmony with nature and the power of their two rivers. The Kokra River canyon just below the town is a unique phenomenon. A walk along the river banks is a refreshing experience. On the other side, the old town is embraced by the river Sava, a true paradise for anglers and fishermen.
5. The pleasures of delicious cuisine
Kranj cuisine should not be missed. Most of the names of the typical dishes begin with the adjective 'kranjski' (originally from Kranj). Kranjska sausages and the local beer are a legendary culinary couple. On a hiking trip it is great to stop at one of the farmsteads, while the market of freshly prepared delicacies called KRanska Kuhna invites you to visit the town..
6. Fresh creative energy
The town is permeated by the urban artistic rhythm. Exhibitions open one after another; here is a new photo exhibition, while over there is an exhibition by local painters, and on the other side a new graffiti wall pops up. The evening programme is packed with music events in the open air and in clubs.
7. Great men of Kranj
The history of Kranj has been marked by several important Slovenes. In addition to the Slovenian poet France Prešeren, many other Kranj inhabitants have been renowned, such as the enlightened patron of the arts Žiga Zois, painter Leopold Layer, publicist Janez Bleiweiss and the inventor of glass photography, Janez Puhar.
8. Architecture and design masterpieces
The towers of the main Gothic church and ancient defence turrets shape the city. An important mark has also been left by renowned architects, such as Jože Plečnik and his student Edvard Ravnikar. Kranj is also the birthplace of industrial designer Davorin Savnik, famous for his telephone 'Fittipaldi', which is now an exhibit at New York´s MoMA.
9. Magical scenery for events
Each year on 8 February, the traditional Prešeren Fair transforms the old town of Kranj into the image of the 19th century, attracting 20,000 visitors. The locals have the most fun at the peak of the summer at the music festival Kranfest, while in November the tunnels under old Kranj are turned into the ‘Wine Road’ gastronomic labyrinth.
