Are you planning to visit Kranj at the end of August and in September? We have chosen five events for you, in order to make your visit to our town even more enjoyable.
1. Rekreatur 2016
The Rekreatur cycling event brings the charm of multiple stage bicycle races to Slovenia and it does so by including mostly non-professional cyclists. Kranj will be the start and the finish line of all the stages that will run across various places of the Gorenjska region. Recreational cyclists will have an opportunity to actively get to know the beauties and jewels of this region. The sporting event will last for four days and so it will also give you the chance to enjoy fabulous and tasteful food. You are welcome to this part of the event as well: Rekreatur is coming!
The Rekreatur cycling event will take place between 25 and 28 August, starting on the Main Square on Thursday at 4.30pm, and then continuing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9am. The final event of Rekreatur will be on 27 August at 9am on the Main Square (Glavni trg).
2. Jazz Camp
Taking place under the veil of the fairy-tale garden of the Café Gallery Pungert, the Jazz Camp will be the defining moment of the late summer in Kranj – already for the thirteenth year in a row. Jazz Camp is not merely a festival, it is a programme of musical workshops, it is a special way of listening to music, it is about enjoying good company, wine, and it is jazz. And it is also the reason why the people of Kranj do not take vacations at the end of August but decide to spend their evenings listening to the sounds of young, non-established, local and international jazz musicians.
Pungert, from 19 to 28 August. Catch a glimpse of jazzy street interventions in the streets of the old town!
3. Independent Film Festival FilmMixer
This film festival is focussing on wishes expressed by the local community and by all film lovers. It lasts four days and shows films that were presented on festivals such as Sundance, Berlinale and Motovun. Its repertoire ranges from American independent films to Georgian films, from motion pictures to documentaries and short films, funny and poetic films. The main theme of this year’s festival will be “Urban Jungle”, so it will introduce stories from cities all over the world. There will be a film workshop inviting you to create a short story about your own town.
Layer House and Škrlovec Tower, from 1 to 4 September, with pre-festival film events on 25 August in the Vovk garden and on 31 August in the Kranj Town Library
The Summer Stage invites you to spend the few remaining warm evenings in the embrace of the medieval Khislstein Castle.
4. World Dance Sport Competition: WDSF Kranj Open – 1st Diamond Cup
It will be the first international dance competition coming to Kranj! Experience the beauty of dance on its highest level; watch the charming waltz, the energetic tango, the seductive rumba and the playful jive. You are also welcome to come and cheer for Slovenian couples. Ballroom and Latin American dance will not be limited only to the competition or to the Zlato polje sports hall – in the first weekend of September, you will be able to hear and see dancing shoes all around the old town. Let them surprise and inspire you!
Saturday, 3 September, and Sunday, 4 September, in the Zlato polje sports hall, ticket pre-sales at TIC Kranj and at any Eventim point of sale.
5. September events on the Khislstein Summer Stage
The Summer Stage invites you to spend the few remaining warm evenings in the embrace of the medieval Khislstein Castle. Traditional klapa singers from Dalmatia will be performing there on Friday, 9 September. And on 16 September, the Summer Stage will say goodbye for this year with a large-scale event – a concert by the Slovenian band Siddharta.
Tickets are available at any Eventim point of sale, Petrol service stations, in the café Khislstein 12.56 and at the Kranjska hiša. On the day of the events, an hour before the concerts, it is possible to purchase them also at the Khislstein Summer Stage box office.
6. Museum Path
The museum Gorenjski muzej strives to combine the past of this region with new paths such as this one, running through various exhibitions and installations. In the Prešeren House, one can take a look at the table at which the great Slovenian poet used to write, and then continue to the former Town Hall with the exhibition called Iron Thread (Železna nit). It is possible to visit the bones of our ancestors in the ossuary (kostnica) and also exceptional archaeological finds from the time of late antiquity in the Khislstein castle. Most renowned visual art of Slovenia can be seen in the Galerija Prešernovih nagrajencev and one can experience the story of Janez Puhar, the inventor of photography on glass, in the Layer House. There, a free coffee awaits you to mark the conclusion of the path! And another thing – before taking this path, it is recommended to download the Nexto app, which can really enhance your experience of it.
