The castle is located in the centre of Kranj and was once an integral part of the city wall. In the middle of the 16th century it was bought by the entrepreneur Johann Khisl and is named after him. In various construction phases, the castle was changed again and again between the 15th and 19th centuries, but its current appearance dates back to the 17th century.
Nowadays, the castle combines knowledge and pleasure, housing the Gorenjska Museum with its educational exhibitions, the Khislstein Open-Air Stage, which in summer hosts a varied cultural program, and the Khislstein Café 12.56, where you can enjoy your favorite drink in a peaceful atmosphere. In the garden of the castle stands a mighty linden tree, which in the summer months becomes a nice background for various cultural events. Next to the castle garden is the Vovk garden with a steel structure symbolizing the former defense tower. Original art installations are occasionally placed both in the garden and in the tower and in summer evenings, they host an open-air cinema.
