Visit the SOS Proteus Info Centre in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj. It is the first information centre in the world where you can see the white and black cave olms and learn about their natural habitat, their lifespan and many other secrets of the underground world.
You will get first-hand information about these cave salamanders from researchers of the Tular Cave Laboratory, where they have been studying and rescuing these animals for 60 years already. The centre is a sanctuary for injured and sick cave olms. For the first time in history of displaying cave olms, visitors are able to see animals that have been rescued from other caves where they would not survive.
Groundwater, where cave olms live, is the main source of drinking water in Slovenia. In fact, it accounts for 99% of our drinking water!
In addition to education and awareness-raising on the importance of protecting cave olms, you will also learn how important it is to protect groundwater resources, their natural habitat and the main source of drinking water in our country.
The SOS Proteus Info Centre is something for curious visitors! In addition to large aquariums with the olms, the centre is equipped with information boards and audio-video presentations. It is also a research centre – the first of its kind in the world to study the impact of visitors on olms. So all of you who visit the centre will help to improve their living conditions!
The many years of experience of the researchers at the Tular Cave Laboratory make it possible to view the cave olms in a way that is friendly to them.
By visiting the SOS Proteus Info Centre, you will also become a direct supporter of cave olms! The Tular Cave Laboratory invests all the funds raised back into the research and protection of these animals.
