Springtime in Kranj

Spring brings a lively and fresh atmosphere to this town with an abundance of cultural events.

Ancient Slovenian customs awaken with the Cheerful Carnival and then in March with the little boats carrying candles, the so-called gregorčki, at the festive celebration of love. The most important cultural event this spring is the 50th Week of Slovenian Drama with its rich and high quality programme. Longer and warmer days are also very inviting for trips in nature. Where would you go? Read our selection of things that should not be missed this spring.

Cheerful Carnival

We will be calling spring with lots of silliness when the masks will be on a parade through the streets. The carnival starts at 11am on the Main Square and at 2pm the parade with ethnographically interesting groups from Slovenia and abroad will start in front of the Town Library, ending in front of the Prešeren Theatre.

Saint Gregory's feast day

Get to know the Slovenian day of lovers, for which the folk tradition says that this is the day when the birds get married and announce the coming of spring. On the eve of St. Gregory’s day (March 11th), we will gather on the banks of the Kokra River in its canyon and traditionally let the gregorički float down the river with their tiny little lights. We’ll say goodbye to the short winter days and welcome spring that will bring more sunshine and warmer weather, by letting the colourful little boats shine with their fairy-tale lights in the Kokra River canyon.

Week of Slovenian Drama

This year, the 50th Week of Slovenian Drama will be celebrated at the Prešeren Theatre and it starts on 27 March, the World Theatre Day. Every year, this festival is a highlight of Slovenian theatre, as it focuses on drama texts written and staged in Slovenia. In addition to the selection of the best drama performances from last year, there are also round tables, writing workshops and a varied accompanying program. The main aim of the festival is to promote Slovenian theatre texts, so that they would be performed and written more often and that they would be staged also abroad. The festival will be concluded with the Rudi Šeligo Award for the best drama performance and the Slavko Grum Award for the best drama written in Slovenian.

Cleaning campaign: Let's clean up in Kranj – Kranj is no longer dirty

Spring cleaning is not only something you do at home, we can also clean the town and its surroundings! The local scouts are organizing this campaign and they want to draw more attention to how we take care of the streets and squares our town, but especially of its green surroundings. It is very important to raise awareness of the environment and this begins in every house with a proper separation and disposal of waste. The event will feature a variety of entertainment programs that will take place in the Main Square.

Young People's Week

When spring turns into summer and when those who have their heads full of school suddenly start thinking of summer vacations, it’s the time for Kranj to organize the Week of the Youth. The festival draws thousands of young people to the town with its youthful feel and colourful program. The organizers also promise many sporting events, events for children, culture, music, education and international events.

Šmarjetna gora

The spring sun calls for trips in nature! Fortunately, Kranj and its surroundings offer quite some nice opportunities to get some fresh air. One of them is definitely our “Šmarjetna.” The hill can be reached on foot, by bike or by car. When the weather is nice, you have a wonderful view of one fifth of Slovenia from the top.

Sveti Jošt

This is another popular hill that offers the chance to relax just a short distance from the town. There are many ways to its top, either on foot, by bike, or by car. Then you can enjoy the view of the surrounding hills while treating yourself to one of the specialties prepared in the Dom na Joštu inn.

Park Brdo

The park is worth a visit in every season, but in springtime it is definitely something special. It extends over 478 hectares with forests, avenues and ponds and has some rare and impressive sceneries in which the distant past mixes with modern times. This gem is only a 10-minute drive from the centre of Kranj and it is like a Slovenia in miniature, with white Lipizzaner horses, painted beehive panels and hay racks covered with straw. Many different experiences are also organized there.
