Views over the city and a mysterious salamander beneath it
Descend into secret tunnels below the old town centre. The SOS Proteus Information Centre is an olm sanctuary dedicated to safeguarding the endangered underground world, where a committed team of scientists look after rescued olms (Proteus anguinus), a species of cave salamander popularly known as the “human fish”. Guided tours and digital journeys below the town are also available every day. From deep underground, climb the bell tower of St Kancijan’s Church for the very best view of the city and all three of Slovenia’s Alpine ranges.
