The Old Post Building

The postal station was built here in 1770 by Kranj’s first postman, Jurij Koderman. It was the main stop for stagecoaches between Ljubljana and Tržič and they stopped here several times a week on their way to Klagenfurt and back.

The building as we see it today is the result of many expansions that adapted to various activities carried out here. Among other things, there was also a pub which the poet Dr. France Prešeren liked to frequent. The house got its present-day appearance between the years 1929 and 1930, when the investor and wholesaler Franc Gorjanc commissioned the construction of a new wing for his hotel. The hotel had a café, a restaurant and 40 rooms, so it was one of the largest and most modern hotels in Slovenia at the time. The four caryatids on the façade are the work of the sculptor Lojze Dolinar and symbolize trade, industry, agriculture and science.

Today, many activities are taking place in the Old Post and most of all, we recommend you to visit to the café on the top floor, where you can enjoy good drinks and food, but above all the wonderful view.
