The origin of the chapel is not known, but it is believed to have been built in the 11th century, perhaps earlier. A few years ago there was still a sieve-makers hut in its immediate vicinity. As the name implies, people used to make sieves there.
The good reputation of their high-quality sieves went far beyond the borders of Europe. But the chapel still stands at the foot of Šmarjetna gora. When you visit it, this is an ideal opportunity to walk to the top of the hill and enjoy the wonderful view.
