Church of St. Margaret

The hill of Šmarjetna Gora has such a great location that it has always been an attractive spot for anyone who wanted to have a good view of everything that was going on in the valley. So castles were built here, as well as ditches and other places of refuge. The little church of St. Margaret at the top of the hill still was once an important place of pilgrimage.

It was built in the 9th or 10th century and first mentioned in historic documents in 1272, then again in 1342 when it was renewed. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret, the patron saint that people called upon for the protection from of thunderstorms and hail. Nowadays this church comes to life for all major church festivals, weddings and baptisms.
