Nataša Mohar Mustafa from Kranj has been baking cakes and other confectionery for almost three decades at the Kraljevi mignon pastry shop, which is located on the ground floor of one of the blocks of flats in the Planina III neighbourhood. The patisserie’s slogan is clear and consists of just four words: “House of good cakes”.
As she writes on their website, this Royal Mignon is a story of childhood reverie: “It all started in the kitchen at home, on a little antique footstool with a cooking spoon in my hand. I was the child with sticky fingers, flour in my hair and sugar all around, a test of my mother’s patience.” Nataša loved to freely shape animals out of dough and charm with baked goodies, but when asked about her future mission, she answered firmly: “When I’m big, I’ll be an ambassador!”
But this was not to be, because in 1986, one year after graduating from high school, Nataša went to the United States to improve her English – the first stop on the road to becoming proficient in at least five world languages. In addition to her studies in New York, she worked in a pastry shop in her spare time. When she returned to Gorenjska, she first worked as a tourist guide, but soon she started to realise her childhood dream and opened the Royal Mignon in 1997.
Today, Nataša and her husband Zaid and their team prepare delicious pastries for their guests and also bake to order for various occasions – weddings, birthdays and everything in between.
In the summer, they also make ice creams, a divine baklava and occasionally some very unique desserts – like the potato cake from Šenčur.
