The area at the tip of the rock on which the old town of Kranj stands is called Pungert. The name comes from the German Baumgarten and indicates that the orchards of the townspeople were located here.
At Pungert, you will find the only completely preserved medieval defense tower in its renovated form from the 16th century. It was rebuilt when it was used as a city dungeon and later even for apartments. In the immediate vicinity of the tower, a Gothic church was built in the 15th century and dedicated to St. Sebastian, Fabian and Rochus, the saints that were believed to give protection against the plague.
Pungert is a popular place for families and fans of good music. Children like to attend events in the Pungert tower and play on the outdoor playground in the immediate vicinity of the charming bar where their parents can enjoy the jazz rhythms that can be heard live here during the summer months.
Further information about the city walls of Kranj can be found in the leaflet.
