For several years now, the first Slovenian photographer and inventor of photography on glass, Janez Puhar, has has his own memorial museum in the cultural quarter of Kranj, across the street from the Layer House. Until now, the museum has been open by appointment, but from April this year, it will be open every day for self-guided tours.
Inside you will find the camera obscura, the forerunner of the photographic camera, through which you can see the inventor’s workbench with countless interesting details of the time.
A film about Puhar introduces you to his life and the process of taking photographs on glass, and you can play with optical toys in the Room of Moving Images and Illusions.
In the 19th-century photography studio, you can dress up in the costume of the time and take a selfie to remember this moment.
You can still book one of the two special experiences, or both, by prior arrangement:
→ Interactive adventure “Puhar’s Secret Laboratory”: Travel back to the inventor’s time and use coded messages, hidden clues and various mechanisms to get to the bottom of Puhar’s secret (duration 30 minutes). The game is suitable for children from 7 years of age, families and also older people who wish to have fun in their free time.
→ My portrait on glass: Become a lady or a gentleman of the time and be reminded of your visit to the museum and the atelier by your own portrait on glass, made with the help of a camera obscura – the precursor of the photographic camera.
So enter the time of the inventor Puhar, his mysterious world of illusions, riddles, photography and a selfie on glass.
