Festive Advent in Kranj

The largest town beneath Slovenia’s snow-capped Alpine peaks is at its most festive in December. Kranj is the country’s third-largest festival and cultural centre. In winter, the old town is transformed from top to bottom. Even underground, a fairy tale of light comes alive. On 3 December, the lights switch on in Kranj, marking the opening of the Christmas market, a diverse programme of concerts by renowned Slovenian performers, and a number of city experiences offered at wonderfully festive prices.
The people of Kranj wait until 3 December to switch on the lights, honouring the birthday of France Prešeren, the great Slovenian poet after whom the city’s main street and all its cultural institutions are named. On 3 December, all Slovenia celebrates this merry day of culture. In Kranj, this day marks the beginning of Festive Advent.

During Festive Advent, a special 20% discount applies to all city experiences and guided tours in Kranj. Enjoy views of the snow-covered Alps from the highest bell tower of St Cantianus’ Church, see the human fish at the SOS Proteus Information Centre, explore the seasonally decorated tunnels beneath old Kranj, and visit the Cabinet of the Inventor Janez Puhar.
Christmas market at Poštna Street
Between 3 and 28 December, Poštna Street comes to life with Christmas stalls, sweet treats and gifts crafted by local artisans. Every day from Friday to Sunday between 16:00 and 21:00, and on Saturdays also from 08:00 to 12:00, you can enjoy festive drinks, products made of wood, honey-based specialties and seasonal decorations.
