The largest town beneath Slovenia’s snow-capped Alpine peaks is at its most festive in December. Kranj is the country’s third-largest festival and cultural centre. In winter, the old town is transformed from top to bottom. Even underground, a fairy tale of light comes alive. On 3 December, the lights switch on in Kranj, marking the opening of the Christmas market, a diverse programme of concerts by renowned Slovenian performers, and a number of city experiences offered at wonderfully festive prices.

The people of Kranj wait until 3 December to switch on the lights, honouring the birthday of France Prešeren, the great Slovenian poet after whom the city’s main street and all its cultural institutions are named.
