ℹ️ In October and November, Halloween and the Wine Route are taking place in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj.
Because of this, guided and independent tours are cancelled or will not be possible on October 17, 18, 24, 25 and 26, and November 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30.
Visit the SOS Proteus Information Centre for the protection of cave salamanders in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj. There, you will be able to learn first-hand from researchers of the Tular Cave Laboratory about the life of olms in their inaccessible underground world, why they are endangered, and why underground waters must remain clean. By visiting, you become a supporter of olms, as all proceeds from admission fees go towards researching and protecting this endangered animal.
The SOS Proteus Information Center is something special for curious visitors. It is equipped with information boards, video presentations, and aquariums with live olms. Researchers from the Tular Cave Laboratory will guide you through the centre. The main purpose of the centre is to educate and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the olms and underground water sources, from which 99% of Slovenia’s drinking water is drawn.
The underground waters where olms live are a valuable source of our drinking water!
The centre takes care of rescued olms that were carried to the surface by underground floods to where they would not have survived otherwise. Thus, after 200 years, displaying olms to the public no longer has a negative impact on nature and is animal-friendly. This is ensured by researchers at the Tular Cave Laboratory where olms have been studied and protected for 60 years already. At the same time, the SOS Proteus Information Center, the first centre of its kind in the world, has introduced the monitoring of the impact of visitors on olms. By visiting it, you not only become a direct supporter of the olms, but you also contribute to improving their living conditions.
