Climate change is becoming increasingly noticeable in Kranj, as higher temperatures, more frequent heat waves and storms, and a shorter snow season are affecting the way we experience the city and its surroundings.
Although these phenomena pose challenges, they also open up opportunities for the development of tourism that will be sustainable and attractive throughout the year.
Urban tourism can be strengthened as periods of pleasant temperatures are getting longer, allowing more time for walks through the old town centre (Kranj’s trio of self-guided tours, Tour of the Kokra River canyon, Classic tour of Kranj and many more) and offering more opportunities for cultural events (Cheerful December, Cheerful Summer and other selected events) and gourmet experiences (Long Table of Kranj, Fine cuisine in and around Kranj, It’s Friday already…).
In the summer, more attention will need to be paid to the comfort and safety of visitors. This means more green areas and bodies of water, drinking fountains, and cooled spaces that create a pleasant urban environment. It makes sense to plan events in the morning or evening hours, and programs for tourists can also be expanded to around water (Kokra River Canyon).
Winter tourism is changing faster than ever before. The Krvavec and Stari vrh ski resorts are facing uncertain snow conditions, making artificial snowmaking an increasingly unsustainable solution. Instead, there is an opportunity to develop year-round programmes, from hiking and cycling (active recreation) to wellness and cultural programs.
The municipality will need to pay particular attention to managing the carrying capacity of ecosystems and directing visits, which includes limiting access to overcrowded areas, advance ticket sales, and addressing traffic challenges.
Adapting to climate change requires the cooperation of all stakeholders. Tourism providers can contribute by creating innovative products that are not tied to only one season. Local restaurants (cuisine in Kranj) will be encouraged ass well. As extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, clear communication during such events and educating employees and visitors on how to provide assistance in emergency situations are becoming crucial.
