The top 3 sights in Kranj’s old town that give you a sense of Alpine air and city flair of this centre of the Gorenjska region – as part of a guided tour.
The tallest bell tower above the city, the Cabinet of the Inventor Puhar in the city and the Tunnels under the Old Town of Kranj beneath the city.
Do you prefer the city, the underground or the rooftops?
ABOVE THE CITY

Above the city, the bell tower of the Church of St. Cantianus has the most beautiful view, reaching from this city that is built on a rock to the highest Slovenian peaks.
163 steps wind up to a 40-metre-high viewing platform between the six hundred-year-old walls, and as you walk them, they tell you the story of the history of the church, one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Slovenia – an experience for body and soul.
IN THE CITY
The hidden secret in the city is the photographic studio of Janez Puhar, the inventor of photography on glass and the world’s first selfie. The old studio in an exhibition of his original tools and a room of moving pictures and illusions.
Visitors can dress up in 19th-century costumes and create a portrait on glass, just like in Puhar’s time – just like a leap into the past.
UNDER THE CITY
30 metres under the city there are the 1300 metres of Kranj underground. The Tunnels under the Old Town of Kranj, once the city’s bomb shelter and now one of the its biggest attractions and home to the SOS Proteus Info Centre, a pioneering sanctuary for olms.
A special experience in the tunnels is the simulation of an air raid, then there is an exhibition of minerals and fossils, there are cave animals and real stalactites – a challenge for explorers.
