The people of Kranj like to spend their afternoons and weekends climbing one of the nearby hills or mountains. Although our enthusiasm for hiking persists throughout all seasons and in all weather conditions, it gets a new boost in spring.
Lace up your hiking boots, sling your backpack over your shoulders, put a smile on your face, and get ready for pleasantly tired muscles and a full heart. Don’t turn your trip into a competition to see how fast you can reach the top. Take the time to observe all the beauty you encounter along the way – listen to the birds singing and admire the other beauties of spring awakening in nature.

A picnic in the park or a cake in the city – the choice is yours
Spring brings freshness to the dishes that are served in Kranj. Longer and warmer days make us want to spend time outside. The picnic basket prepared for you at the Brdo Estate combines local delicacies with the beautiful nature of Brdo Park for a culinary experience. With an electric golf cart, you will discover hidden corners of the park while searching for the perfect picnic spot. Then, just spread out your blanket and enjoy the delicacies prepared for you by Brdo’s master chefs.
Spring-inspired cakes and other sweets are available in Kranj’s pastry shops. While enjoying these delicious treats, take the time to observe the life in the city and plan your next adventure in and around Kranj.
Discover Kranj in a way that remains hidden to most visitors. You will see well-known and lesser-known corners of the city in an interesting way and experience them in a completely different light than most people do. You will see and experience things that even the locals don’t know about. You will visit 14 sights in Kranj that are connected with Slovenia’s greatest poet, Dr. France Prešeren. Each tour is a story in itself, as the next step is always decided by the toss of a coin – “If it’s tails, we go left, and if the coin flips to heads, we go right” – and you set off on a fateful journey that explores the duality and contradictions of the giant of Slovenian poetry and the city of Kranj.
An old Slovenian custom is still alive on St. Gregory’s Day is, which was considered the first day of spring according to the Julian calendar. Especially in the Gorenjska region, craftsmen and artisans symbolically welcomed the arrival of longer spring days, when it would no longer be necessary to work by artificial light, by letting handmade boats, so-called gregorčki, with lit candles, float down the river.
At the same time, Gregorjevo is also known as the day when birds get married, and has thus also established itself as a day for lovers. In Kranj, we also like to celebrate Gregorjevo. On the eve of St. Gregory’s Day, we will be making the gregorčki from eco-friendly materials, and then we’ll let them float down the Kokra River canyon.
The scene is truly special, as the tiny boats with candles light up the canyon. The celebration does not have the global recognition of Valentine’s Day, but it invites us to become aware of much more important things – our connection with nature, with our roots, and with each other.
Programme (11 March 2026):
→ 4 pm: Workshop for making the gregorčki floats at the house called Petrčkova hiša, its courtyard is the location of the city market (Google Maps)
→ 6 pm: Releasing the gregorčki so that they float down the canyon
