January 2026

Food & drinks: Sentiment Restaurant

At this restaurant, every dish is prepared with attention to detail. All flavors and textures are in a tasty balance thanks to seasonal ingredients.

You have the choice of lunch and dinner menus or à la carte dishes. The restaurant at Prešernova ulica 6 is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30am to 9pm, Sundays and holidays by appointment.

Shopping: bookstores in the city

There are three bookstores in the city center of Kranj – Fragmenti, Mladinska knjiga and Knjigarna Ognjišče.

Fragmenti is, among other things, an antique bookshop with a careful selection, combining the love of books with the circular economy. From Prešernova Street, where Fragmenti is located, you can walk to Maistrov trg, where you will find Mladinska knjiga. The popular books there are complemented by gifts and toys.

If you walk to Slovenski trg, you will come to Knjigarna Ognjišče at Koroška cesta 3, which could be called a gift shop, as it offers a wide range of interesting products in addition to books.

Tip for a trip: Kranj trio of self-guided tours

If you prefer to see the sights at your own pace and at a time that suits you, we recommend an independent tour of the Tunnels under old town of Kranj, which are still festively decorated until the end of January, or the bell tower of St. Cantianus or the Cabinet of Inventor Puhar.

We recommend purchasing a single ticket to visit all three. Tours are available every day between 9am and 5:30pm.

You can buy tickets online or at the Kranjska hiša tourist information center (Glavni trg 2), from where you can walk to any of the three sights. Admission is free for children under 3 years of age.

February 2026

Food & drinks: Cheerful street food

For years, the food stands called Prešerna kuhna have been making sure that visitors to Prešeren Fair don’t go home hungry or thirsty.

This time, the cuisine event has two locations for the first time – in addition to the permanent one in front of the Prešeren Theater, the new one will be where one usually finds the open-air market.

For the first time in 35 years, it will be possible to reach this city market from the Main Square. The two locations will be offering two types of cuisine. In front of the Prešeren Theatre, the focus will be on Slovenian cuisine, while the stands at the market will have international cuisine.

See here to find out what you could taste and try there between 10am and 6pm.

Shopping: Fair of home-made arts and traditional crafts

Fairs are one of the activities that used to flourish in Kranj. People came to Kranj fairs from near and far across the Austrian Empire. The weekly grain fair was the largest in the Carniola region and Inner Austria!

We will be reviving memories of the golden age of fairs on February 8 between 10am and 6pm, as stalls selling local products and handicrafts will be set up throughout the city center.

Kranj is a city where the romantically tragic spirit of Dr. France Prešeren can be felt at almost every turn – from the house where he lived and died to Prešeren’s Grove, where he is buried.

Prešeren’s Day on February 8 is one of the most famous ways in which the people of Kranj and visitors from near and far pay tribute to the memory of our greatest poet.

Its program lasts all day and includes a wide variety of events and experiences – from performances by folklore groups and a festival of barrel organ players to a concert by Oto Pestner and the Slovenian Octet. See the full program here.

Not to be missed: Every day is Prešeren’s Day

February in Kranj is not only a month of culture because of Prešeren’s holiday, but also because of the 8-day celebration of culture and experiences, which we have named Every Day is Prešeren’s Day.

From 1 to 8 February 2026, Kranj’s cultural institutions invite you to visit them and participate in the events they have prepared for you.

March 2026

Food & Drinks: Gostilna Rekar

The restaurant in the village of Orehek is now run by the third generation of restaurateurs. Their menu features traditional dishes, but complemented by those with a more modern twist.

When visiting, be sure not to miss their house-made pies in various flavours. You can also find their pies elsewhere in Kranj and the surrounding area.

Shopping: Art Flower Shop

The flower shop at No. 2 Bleiweisova Street is run by Olga Šimenc and Nina Zupan since January 1 of this year. Both have shared a passion for flowers and creativity since their youth and will provide you with high-quality bouquets, flower arrangements and other floral products. For anyone looking to bring a touch of spring into their home, they have this message:

In the spring, we recommend fresh, vibrant combinations of tulips, ranunculus and spring twigs to bring a sense of new beginnings into your home. For a softer look, pastel tulips with eucalyptus are an excellent choice, and potted plants like hyacinths or daffodils also work beautifully.

The flower shop is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and Saturdays from 8am to 12 noon.

Tip for a trip: Sv. Lovrenc at foot of the Storžič Mountain

The hill of St. Lawrence features one of the oldest churches in the area and its mountain cottage called Dom na Lovrencu is famous for its delicious doughnuts and other house-made treats.

This hill and its surroundings offer a relaxing getaway in the kingdom of the Storžič mountain and are just begging to be visited.

You can view the full route description here.

Event: Restaurant Week in Spring

Between March 20 and 29, don’t miss the Restaurant Week that will take place at 123 Slovenian restaurants, including our local ones, Krištof, pr’ Matičku, Ivan, Brioni and Pr’ Končovc.

The menus at all four of them sound delicious, so we recommend you make your reservations soon.

Not to be missed: ECO Week and cleanup campaign

The ECO Week raises awareness about the necessity of environmental protection, responsible behaviour and the adoption of sustainable lifestyle practices in our daily lives and its programme will be exceptionally diverse this year. It reaches its climax with the outdoors cleanup campaign “Kran’ ni več usran”.

In addition to this, we’ll be learning about the fish and birds in the Kranj area and taking a nature walk; we’ll learn a lot about how to increase biodiversity and why wetlands are important, we’ll identify invasive plants and why it could be good to remove them, we’ll be able to exchange and recycle all sorts of things, and finally, as already mentioned, we’ll clean up Kranj. All events are free of charge.

April 2026

Food & Drinks: Gostilna Lakner

The Lakner restaurant stands in the shade of old chestnut trees in Kokrica near Kranj. They serve lunch menus every day and prepare a wide variety of home-made dishes.

In doing so, they prioritize local ingredients, collaborate with farms in the Gorenjska region and are committed to authentic flavours that are quite enchanting.

Shopping: Easter Delicacies

Households in Kranj are already busy preparing delicious Easter treats to place on their tables during the holidays. If you don’t have time to prepare them yourself, visit local markets and shops selling local specialities, as they will be well-stocked these days with everything you need for an Easter feast.

You can view the list of markets here.

Tip for a trip: traditional throwing of coins into Easter eggs

For over 50 years, the Kokrica Tourist Association has made a significant contribution to preserving folk customs and cultural heritage through numerous events. Among these is the annual Easter egg cracking on Easter Monday. Through fun and socializing, you’ll learn about old customs that have been preserved to this day.

But you won’t just get the chance to watch the egg games, you’ll also be able to compete in them. You can test your skills in knocking eggs and in tapping them with a crooked stick. You can also compete in egg cracking as a team—three people per team. The organizers are preparing a children’s program as well, where, in addition to cracking eggs, children can have fun rolling eggs on a washboard and a rake, as well as decorating eggs.

The traditional Easter egg-cracking event will take place on Monday, April 6 2026, between 9am and 12pm in front of the Mercator Supermarket in Kokrica. At 10:30am, there will be a reception for Olympic gold medallists Niko Vodan and Anže Lanišek, both of whom are from Kokrica.

Event: 56th Week of Slovenian Drama

On Saturday, 27 March, the 56th was the beginning of this theatre festival that it will run through 11 April 2026. It is the central event for productions based on Slovenian plays and the Prešeren Theater in Kranj has been organizing it for over half a century with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Kranj.

The festival plays an extremely important role in Slovenian drama, as it encourages its staging, creation, and promotion, as well as performances abroad.

If you are unable to attend the performances during Slovenian Drama Week or would like to visit the theatre more often, the Prešeren Theatre Kranj has a wide range of excellent productions throughout the season.

You can view its programme here.

Not to be missed: Slovenian Beekeepers’ Open House Day

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, the beekeepers of Kranj will have a gathering on Main Square by the fountain from 9am to 12 noon, so you’ll be able to meet members of the Besnica Beekeepers’ Association, the Britof–Predoslje Beekeepers’ Association, and the Kranj Beekeepers’ Association.

Visitors will learn about bee products, the importance of their quality, and the beekeeping mission; there will be tastings of honey and other honey products, as well as free plants to take home so that they can feed the bees in your gardens, on balconies and windowsills.

May 2026

Food & Drinks: It’s a Huge Friday already!

The season of summer evenings by the fountain with delicious food, refreshing drinks and the best company is back! We’ll kick it off in a very special way—the Main Square will be full of food trucks that will be bringing along extra-delicious dishes for every taste. We’ll be joined by the acrobatic basketball masters, the Dunking Devils, who will teach you how to dunk a ball into the basket.

The “Huge Friday” of Kranj will take place on Main Square on May 29 from 12 noon to 10pm.

Shopping: Let’s visit the open-air markets and buy local

Visiting an old-fashioned market is much more than just buying groceries. It’s an opportunity to talk to the producers, to buy the freshest and most seasonal produce without plastic packaging and chat with acquaintances and friends that one meets there by chance. It’s caring for the environment and connecting with the local community.

We residents of Kranj are lucky to have plenty of opportunities to shop at markets. One can prepare delicious and nutritious meals using ingredients purchased at the Stražišče Market (every second Friday of the month), the Mavčiče Market (every fourth Friday of the month), the Stonoga Market (every second week), the City Market (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) or the Market by the Fountain (Saturdays).

Tip for a trip: Udin Forest

With its countless trails, the Udin Forest is an excellent choice for a walk in nature and the countryside. It stretches across a wide area between Kranj, Tržič, and Naklo and is crisscrossed by numerous trails that offer a great opportunity for walking, running or cycling.

Event: 4th Fine Cuisine in and around Kranj

This event showcases the local cuisine of the Gorenjska region and will take place between May 8 and 24, featuring 20 restaurants from 6 municipalities: Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Kranj, Jezersko, Naklo, Preddvor, and Tržič.

Each chef will prepare a menu full of local flavours and modern interpretations of traditional dishes in their own unique way. The common thread running through the menus this time will be honey from local apiaries, which the master chefs will incorporate into appetizers, main courses and desserts.

All menus will be available at the same price (30 euros). Reservations are required and you can be made here.
